2017 is Westpac Bank Australia’s 200th anniversary, and just as the bank is committed to bettering the lives of Australians in 1817, its commitment has not changed today. Westpac is Australia’s first company and Australia’s first bank.
Westpac serves 13 million customers and has 5 key divisions: Consumer Bank, Business Bank, BT Financial Group Australia (BTFG), Westpac Institutional Bank (WIB), and Westpac New Zealand. There are also other business divisions in the Westpac group: Customer and Business Services, Group Technology, Treasury, and Core Support. Consumer Bank is in charge of sales and customer service for 9 million customers. It covers consumer banking for Westpac, St. George, Bank of Melbourne, BankSA, and RAMS. The consumer bank division has 1,429 branches nationwide, and 3,850 automatic teller machines (ATMs). Business Bank takes care of sales and customer service of small to medium-scale enterprise, commercial, and agribusiness. To celebrate its bicentennial year, Westpac supports several initiatives to better the lives of Australians. The Westpac Bicentennial Foundation, established in 2014 is giving away 100 scholarships a year for deserving students. It has a $100 million fund, awarding scholarships every year, forever. There will be scholars chosen from five categories, all future leaders, innovators and pioneers who will build the future of Australia. The five scholarship categories are Asian Exchange, Social Change Fellowship, Future Leaders, Young Technologists, and Research Fellowship.
To celebrate their 200th birthday, Westpac is also giving $200 as a deposit for children born in 2017. The child will be able to withdraw the savings account when he or she is 16 years old. Dubbed as the Westpac Bump Savings account, this is open for all Australians born in 2017. With $200 as the starting point, the money will grow at an interest rate of 1.5% per annum, and Westpac guarantees that there will be no rate changes for the next 16 years. Aside from being born in 2017, the child is eligible if he or she has a permanent Australian residential address, and have the Bump Account opened by their parent or guardian by 31 May 2018.
One more gift for their 200th year is free online maths education for Australian students from years 3-12 in partnership with Mathspace Essentials. Westpac will also reward businesses by choosing ‘200 Businesses of Tomorrow’ that will receive all sorts of recognitions.
