National Australia Bank Overview

NAB contact detailsNational Australia Bank or NAB is part of the big four financial establishments in Australia.  This is based solely on customer volume and market capitalisation. NAB is a publicly traded company on the Australian Stock Exchange. As a financial institution, it has been serving the needs of Australian for 150 years. NAB’s vision is to be Australia and New Zealand’s most respected bank.

NAB’s key products are consumer banking, business banking, wholesale banking, wealth management, and insurance. There are currently 35,000 employees at NAB, and they serve about 10 million customers at more than 800 locations in and around Australia, New Zealand, and the whole world.

NAB is known as Australia’s largest business bank.  NAB works with all business sizes – small, medium, and large enterprises and helps them start, run, and grow.  Currently, NAB has assisted 440,000 Australians with microfinance products in order to jumpstart their businesses.  Some of these small loans recipients are people who are excluded from mainstream finance. Approved microfinance loans reached up to $190 million.

NAB is known in the banking industry as responsible, inclusive, and innovative.  They have several community projects that they have been funding through the years, which include schools, public roads, and hospitals. In fact, NAB was able to invest $48.8 million in the community in 2016.

Adhering and committing to their slogan “We’re more than Money” NAB is serious about Corporate Responsibility.  In their latest report on their corporate responsibility performance, NAB has identified six prioritised themes that are important to their stakeholders, which include customers, employees, investors, and Non-Government organisations.

NAB’s prioritised themes are Customer Security, Values-aligned culture, Responsible lending practices, Good governance processes, Transparency and disclosure, and improving customer experience. Customer information and money security are very important for NAB.  Partnerships with cyber security corporations help NAB monitor and manage cyber threats. NAB is now committed to having a values-aligned culture in all areas of their performance management framework.  NAB has put in place several initiatives that adhere to the reinforcement of values promoted by the Australian Bankers’ Association: standards of service, integrity, trust, and ethics. NAB also adheres to responsible lending practices and makes sure that the policies in place when it comes to lending are suited to customers’ needs and ability to repay. Good governance and leadership at NAB is important for all stakeholders. Company leaders should be capable and able to support long-term value creation. Operational transparency impacts the business. There are particular requests for disclosure in areas such as organisational culture, climate change, and taxation. Perhaps one of the most important priority themes for NAB is improving the customer experience.

Additional priority themes are financial inclusion, environmental wellbeing, and diversity and inclusion. Financial inclusion is made through a partnership with Good Shepherd Microfinance. NAB’s environmental agenda focuses on areas of climate change, resource scarcity, and biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. NAB is also aiming for more diversity in the workplace through gender pay equality and managing an ageing workforce. There are 38% of Executive Management roles that are held by women. NAB is committed to gender equality and helping women thrive in the workplace. As of 30 September 2016, NAB has employed more than 200 plus indigenous Australians.
