Melbourne Airport Overview

 

Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine Airport) is the only international airport within the metropolitan area of Melbourne, Victoria.  It is the second busiest airport in Australia, second only to Sydney International Airport, based on passenger movements. Melbourne Airport is 23 kilometres away from the Centre city of Melbourne. The land on which the airport sits used to be rural grassland which the Commonwealth Government acquired in 1959.

 

Melbourne Airport is owned by Australia Pacific Airports Corporation Limited (APAC), and it is operated under a long-term 50-year lease from the Federal Government of Australia, and it has an option to extend for 49 more years. APAC also operates the Launceston Airport. Melbourne Airport is a lucrative enterprise, with total revenue totalling $861.3 million in 2016, an 11% increase from 2015. This was largely due to the 5.2% increase in total passengers in 2016. There were a total of 9.2 million international passengers and 24.7 million Melbourne domestic passengers in 2016. The top 5 growth markets in terms of tourists in the Melbourne passenger lists are from Taiwan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

 

Melbourne Airport is the home base for two major Australian airlines: Jetstar Airways and Tiger Airways Australia.  It is also one of the major hubs of Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Melbourne Airport currently has 4 terminals and 56 gates.  There are 40 gates reserved for domestic flights and 16 gates for international flights.

 

There are currently 6 domestic airlines flying to 32 destinations around Australia, and 29 international airlines flying to 33 destinations. The newly-opened Terminal 4 at Melbourne Airport is completely self-service, the first of its kind in the region. This enables passengers to experience an express, seamless journey through the use of self-service check-in kiosks and automated bag drop facilities.  It is dedicated to budget airlines and is used by Tigerair Australia, Jetstar Airways, Airnorth, and Regional Express Airlines (Rex).

Melbourne Airport is currently undergoing major renovations, which is slated to be a two-year project with investments of more than $1 billion. This is expected to be the biggest transformation of the airport since it was opened in 1970.

The departure lounge of the Melbourne Airport Terminal 4 has 1,200 seats, a relaxing area for passengers to wait for their next flight.  It comes equipped with dining areas, retail stores, and coffee shops. The terminal has 36 self-service kiosks and 18 automated bag drops.

 

Retail shops such as Rip Curl, Victoria’s Secret, Icons, and many more are available for last-minute shopping in Terminal 4.  There are also food and beverage shops such as McDonald’s, Krispy Kreme, Think Asia, Sushi Sushi, Brassiere Bread, and much more.

 

Terminal 4 also has a transport hub, which has seven levels of parking, 2,850 bays for passengers, drop-off, pick-up, taxis, and buses all located under one roof.

Car park rates for same day return starts at $45.00 at terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Two-day bundles are available for terminals 1 to 3 and start at $65.00.

 

The long-term car park service is also available for travellers who will be gone from a few weeks up to a month. The self-park facility for long-term parking has disabled access and is 4-5 minutes to the terminal on a shuttle bus. Long-term parking rates start from $25 for up to 24 hours to $139 for 14 days, with a $10 per extra day fee.

 

There is also available on-the-day parking in all terminals, which start at $5 for the first 15 minutes.

 

Taxi ranks are available in all terminals of Melbourne airport. Just like in any other airport hubs, taxi fares vary based on distance, location, and time of travel.  An additional fee of $3.58 is incurred for airport taxis.  If the passenger is travelling between the hours of 10 PM and 5 PM, they will be required to pre-pay the estimated fare.  This serves as a deposit. At the end of the trip, when the actual fare is shown, the passenger may either pay more or receive change.

Other transportation alternatives are to hire cars and pre-booked taxis.  

 

Passengers may also take the SkyBus, a cost-effective and convenient travel solution to passengers.  It operates 24/7 and departs every 10 minutes.  It provides service to passengers from Melbourne Airport into Melbourne’s CBD, St. Kilda, Frankston, and bayside. It is considered the best and most affordable transport service, offering customers free Wi-Fi, and built for travellers, with luggage racks, onboard luggage compartments, and low floors. It also has wheelchair access.

 

For ultimate convenience, Melbourne Airport has six accredited rental companies located in the airport.  There are designated information desks at the terminals.  The six rental companies are Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, and Redspot.

 

Passengers can also use airport public buses.  The public bus stop at the airport is at the transport hub in Terminal 4. There are 4 airport bus routes:  SmartBus Route 901 going to Frankston, Route 478 which is Melbourne Airport via Melrose Drive, Route 479 which is Sunbury Station via Melbourne Airport, and Route 482, which is Melbourne Airport via South Centre Rd.

  • How to cancel my online booking?

 

It is very easy to cancel an online booking for a fare. However, you need to follow the protocol. Certain conditions may apply. All type of fare types can be cancelled easily.  Lite fares can be cancelled upto 24 hours prior fares can be cancelled upto 2 hours prior. To cancel your booking simply go to ‘manage my  booking’ to cancel it.

  • Will I get a specific parking space with my booking?

 

No, you will not get any specific bay allocation within their car parks but you are free to park any available car parking space within your chosen car park. For this, you simply have to follow the green light indicators in TEH At Terminal Car Parking to find a car quicker.

 

  • Where can I park my motorcycle and will I get a discounted fare?

 

Allotted motorcycle parking is located inside the At Terminal T1 T3 T3 Car Park. You’re also free to park inside any of the other accessible bays.

  • What’s the maximum time limit for car parking?

 

With Melbourne Airport you can book online for up to 45 days of parking. Drive up parking is available for an unlimited time period. However, you’ll need to notify us if it’s longer than 60 days.

 

  • What are the length and height limitations of your car parks?

 

Their parking bays are standard length, and can’t accept oversized vehicles such as campervans or trailers.

 

Height limitations of our car parks are:

 

  • At Terminal car parks (T1-3, T4) = 2.2m
  • Premium parking = 2.2m
  • Long Term Car Park = 2.2m
  • Business Car Park = 2.3m

 

  • Can I carry a different vehicle to the one I enrolled with my booking?

 

If you prefer to drive a different car on the day, you are suggested to please update your booking with new registration specifications. Just go to ‘manage my booking’ to upgrade to your reservation.

 

  • For how often does the Long Term car park shuttle run?

 

Their free shuttle bus works 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The bus leaves every five minutes while peak times.

 

  • Where does the Long-Term car park shuttle close?

 

There are eight stations in the Long Term Car Park and stops at every terminal in the following order: Terminal 4, Terminal 3 and Terminal 2, then Terminal 1.

 

  • Where can I park my bike?

 

There are bike racks accessible on the ground level of the At Terminal T1 T3 T3 Car Park. Please note, it is not allowed to park bicycles on footpaths, walkways, entry/exit doors, next to fire hydrants/hose reels or in stairwells. See more information about bicycle parking.

 

  • Do I need to enter the car park earlier or later than my confirmed booking time?

 

Yes. You can enter the car park earlier or later than your confirmed booking time but you may arrive upto one hour before your booked entry time. However, if you arrive any earlier than the time prior to one hour before your booked entry time, you will be charged at drive-up rates (This is nothing but via the rates may vary from the rates quoted via the online booking system).You will not be entitled to a refund or credit on those charges. Note; You may enter a car park after your booked entry time, or you may exit a car park before your booked exit time, without incurring any additional fees.

 

In case, you exit a car park before your booked exit time (as confirmed by Melbourne Airport via email), you will not be entitled to any refund or adjustment. There is only 1 hour grace period for the exit after your booked exit time. If you will exit more than one hour after your booked exit time, you will be charged for the time beyond one hour after your booked exit time at Melbourne Airport’s overstay Tariff Car Park rates( note that  these rates may vary from the rates quoted via the online booking system) and you will not be entitled to a refund or credit on those charges.

  • Can I get a refund if I stay shorter than my pre-booked time?

 

Online bookings offer a discount price on parking. Despite, they are only available for pre-bookings only. The moment you enter the car park, you won’t be able to modify your length of stay. You won’t be eligible for a refund if you end up sojourning shorter than your booking period.

 

  • What to do if I lost my booking confirmation?

 

Don’t worry, and you are still able to enter and exit the booked car park. Simply insert the credit card you used to make the booking at the boom gate.

 

  • What is a Saver fare?

 

Saver fares allow you to cancel your booking for free p to 24 hours before your booking arrival date and time. Any cancelling within 24 hours will incur a 5% cancellation fee. See their parking terms and conditions for more.

  • I come on an international flight into T2 – how do I transfer to a private terminal (T1, T3 or T4)?

 

It is a customs demand that all arriving passengers must collect their luggage and clear customs before assigning to any domestic service.

 

Melbourne Airport has four termini. All Terminals are connected within the same terminal precinct, under one single roof and within walking distance. Our domestic terminals are conveniently positioned on either side of T2 (international) within walking distance. T4 is almost 100 metres walk to the south of T3.

 

There is no inter-airport shuttle at Melbourne Airport. If you need assistance transporting from one terminal to the other, please contact your airline.
